Süleymaniye Hammam was built between 1550 and 1557 by the Ottoman architect Sinan, who also designed the Süleymaniye Mosque. Over 471 years old, it served as a bathhouse for Sultan Suleyman and later sultans.
It offers a traditional Turkish bath experience in a historic setting. Guests enjoy a 90-minute session that includes a relaxing hot room, a full-body scrub, and a soothing soap massage. The experience ends with a 30-minute cooling down period, complemented by drinks.
Wonderful setting in a historical Hamam! The services were all very professional and the overall experience was wonderful. However, I felt that the scrubbing and soaping could have been longer! The price was high for the amount of time spent there! Bookings could only be made online but their booking system was excellent! I had to cancel and rebook due to another excursion I had arranged but the system sent out automatic updates and confirmations so it was no problem! I liked the authenticity and the rituals and we were supplied with underwear and a pestenal ( thin towel) to wear! My husband found the heat overwhelming in the hot room and had to go out into a cooler room several times so I would not recommend the Hamam for people with breathing problems!
Pros:
– amazing historical Hamam used by actual sultans
– very nice aesthetic
– one of the few Hamams that allow couples to go in together (which is the primary reason we went here)
Cons:
– the hamam attendant I had was very impatient and rude and appeared to be phoning it in. This being my first hamam experience and him having broken English wasn’t the most conducive to getting things right the first time and a bit more compassion from the attendant would be appreciated. After all, I’d guess 99% of the folks visiting this hamam are not Turkish. I get that it’s a rough job and can’t be easy but I expected a much better scrub experience (barely 5 mins is what I got) and just overall a more calming time.
– the rude attendant made this more of a stressful session than the supposed relaxing, refreshing experience I had paid for.
Overall, maybe it was just the attendant. The space is beautiful and very surreal and as mentioned before, of historical significance.
Gorgeous architectural relic – it is incredibly clean inside, and beautiful. However the service is truly awful and the overarching energy of the experience proves this to be a total tourist trap. If I am to pay top dollar for a *ahem 60 minute not 90 minute* experience, then I expect top service. The massage is sub par at best, and feels like being barely touched. Afterwards, we still felt sweaty and gross. We asked to wash again after having our tea- which is where things turned for the worst. Though we had permission from the desk manager to rinse off, The masseuses verbally harassed us, opened the door on us naked, and aggressively stood at the door until we were finished. There is also no lotions or oils or anything afterwards so you are left feeling dry, dirty and depleted. A legitimately awful experience , and a shame for such a beautiful relic of the past to be inhabited by such energies.
