Galatasaray Hammam, one of the oldest and most iconic hammams in Istanbul, has been serving guests since 1481. Located in the heart of the city near Istiklal Street, it offers an authentic Turkish bath experience combined with modern services.
It is located within the Galatasaray Külliyesi and was commissioned by Sultan Beyazıt II in 1481, alongside the construction of the entire complex.
The hammam is known for its historic architecture, luxurious treatments, and traditional rituals, including the signature kese (scrub) and foam massage. It’s a perfect blend of heritage and relaxation, ideal for those looking to immerse themselves in centuries-old traditions while enjoying a rejuvenating spa experience.
It feels like a rip off for tourists…
We were welcome to enter immediately, they told us to give 10% discount if we paid cash…
We then were guided in a rather grumpy wat to the dressing room, and after that to the hamam. A local was given scrub with a lot of care and patience. When it was our time, the treatment guy first tried to upsell a massage but for only cash and different prices than announced. When we said no, he was even more grumpy and they gave us a 5 minute treatment. Completely not the thing we paid for in the first place.
It’s a tourist trap or at least a place where tourists are not welcome
Galatasaray Hamam was a great experience for my wife and me!!
I can’t tell you how marvelous this felt after walking all day. I was a limp, clean, relaxed and happy old man when we were done.
The hot room was spacious, and I loved watching the light change through the skylight in the dome. My scrubber (Tem? Jim?) was excellent: genuine, respectful and vigorous. I wish he could work me over every week for the rest of my days. The entire afternoon was perfect.
(There is a different hamami just down the road where we had a terrible experience two days later: overcrowded, indifferent, perfunctory and frustrating. Don’t go there!)
Galatasaray Hamam was perfect. Thank you VERY much!!!
Hm. Probably not the best place to experience relaxing Turkish Hammam.
The clients were quite mixed: confused tourists, single local gentleman, European lads with “ girlfriends for rent” and few Russians. No privacy, over crowded, loud and all together not pleasant experience.
We had a great experience, few people, really nice historical place, the scrub was quick but good and for the foam bath we added a short massage which was amazing. Overall I can really recommend coming here
