Cagaloglu Hammam is an 18th-century masterpiece. Its architecture stands out from classical Ottoman designs, showcasing elements of the Baroque style. This marvelous hammam has served as the backdrop for numerous TV series and movies and has attracted celebrities like Agatha Christie and Cameron Diaz.
With a history spanning over 300 years, Cagaloglu Hammam continues to offer a wide range of services, making it a unique and historic experience.
Managed to book the last slot for a special Turkish bath with foot massage.
Were escorted to the Women’s only section, passed to another staff who then passed you to the scrubbers/masseuse who escorted you to your own changing room. Waited for the same masseuse to come for you to bring you to the sauna where you sit for 10 minutes. Then you are escorted to the main bath area, lay on the marble slabs & get scrubbed with a loofah including your face. Washed before huge amounts of bubbles are used for the bubble massage. Rinse off and lead to the taps for hair wash which is throwing water over your head, shampooed and water over your head to rinse off before conditioning. When you are all done, you are wrapped & taken to the courtyard for snacks & a hot drink before the foot massage starts.
There wasn’t really time to relax much & enjoy the environment of a 500 year old hamam.
Do try to book earlier slots as they are popular
I visited this Hammam whilst writing my Istanbul guide book, I visited on two occasions trying both their entry level and a more premium package.
This Hammam is an excellent ambassador for Turkish Hammam culture. It has a superb balance struck, it is a proper Turkish Bath it isn’t a Turkish Bath themed spa, this is a real Turkish Bath experience and I hope that they maintain this into the future, whilst they offer a range of treatments and options that make them competitive this Turkish Bath really should be the place to go to try the real thing.
The Ottoman era architecture is stunning and presented as would have been recognisable in the times of the Ottoman Empire.
English is spoken proficiently by front of house staff and you aren’t pressured to tip (although the attendants work really hard so would always suggest it’s fairest to)
Would easily recommend and would suggest for the best experience order tip to toe or a slightly premium package to get the full benefit of the place.
Lastly they have a rather illustrious list of past clientele which is certainly an endorsement
A great experience overall! It’s important to book in advance, and I highly recommend making a reservation during the day rather than in the evening. We went in the evening, and it felt like the masseurs were already tired and didn’t have much energy left. Still, it was an enjoyable visit.
I booked the Tip & Toe service on the day via WhatsApp. They thankfully had a 2pm spot for me. I was very impressed from the moment you walk in you are well taken care of. I was having chronic shoulder pain, and it managed to calm down after receiving this service. The bubble massage is well worth it. To be in this beautiful place with ancient marble surrounded by women and experiencing a service that’s very old and unique felt wonderful. If I had more of a budget, I’d definitely have added on a massage, perhaps next time!
